The culture wars between liberals and conservatives continue unabated. The latest flare up in Texas involves what public school educators should teach about economics, government, society and, most prominently, history.

In March 2010, the Texas State Board of Education—dominated by social conservatives—tentatively adopted new K-12 social studies curriculum guidelines that reflect decidedly conservative views on American history as a corrective to perceived past liberal bias. These new standards will guide the selection of textbooks for Texas students in 2011.

The influence of the new standards and resulting textbooks extends far beyond Texas. The Lone Star State adopts textbooks statewide, and ranks second only to California as a textbook purchaser. Texas therefore disproportionately affects the national textbook market and, with its huge volume of textbook purchases, publishers use its core curriculum as a template for books that may be used in more than 40 other states.

Critics of the Texas standards fear that the views of conservative Texas state school board members will set de facto national standards.
